The author of the original German text is Joachim Neander (1650-1680), who studied theology in Bremen. Catherine Winkworth brought this text to the English-speaking world almost three centuries later.  Winkworth’s translation of Neander’s “Lobe den Herren” as “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” first appeared in her Chorale Book for England (1863). Her translation has been widely accepted and may be found in most hymnals. She adapts her English version to the original German tune, something that is a poetic challenge given the differences in how the two languages scan.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!

O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!

All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;

Praise Him in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,

Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!

Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been

Granted in what He ordaineth?
